Hi,
I am trying to install AD on a home computer so that I
can kind of take it for a test drive and see how it
works. The computer has Windows 2000 advanced server
installed and is going to be a DC. The computer has no
outside connectivity, doesn't even have a line going in or
out. I know that you have to set up DNS, before or during
the AD setup, When I set DNS up manually on my machine
everything looks good, but when I run the test either
forward lookup or reverse, it fails, and then when I run
dcpromo it tells me that it can't find the DNS server
servicing my domain and errors out at the end. If I
choose to set up DNS during AD install it also errors
out. I have set my IP to static, since I'm not connected
anywhere I used the IP 205.109.55.22 (255.255.255.0) I
have tried installing WINS, DHCP, I have configured my DNS
settings on card to use myself as the DNS server and I
have set up DNS with all of the correct information as far
as I know. I have tried everything that I can think of,
am I missing something, or am I trying to do something
that can't be done, you can set up AD without any outside
connectivity as a single DC, right? I've read the books
and it looks very straight forward, install DNS, then run
dcpromo. Please help!
Thanks,
Ishmeal

Your setup should work fine. There is no requirement for AD to be able to
contact another network. You may want to terminate the netowork so the
driver is initialized. See this KB for more details.
