Installing a USB mouse

I just built my first system and everything went well.
However I am now stumped because I cannot get my USB
mouse to work.

It is a Microsoft wireless optical mouse connected to the USB port
of a EPOX 8RDA3G. The USB port has power since the light
of the fixed module is on.

The device manage tells me that everything is working well but
the mouse does not respond.

Can someone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

Do you have USB and/or the USB mouse enabled in your BIOS??

Boot the PC without the mouse plugged in, but with the driver disk in the
CDROM. Allow Windows to boot, say OK (using the keyboard) when Windows
indicates that a mouse could not be found, allow Windows to completely boot
and then plug the mouse in. You "should" get a message about Windows
finding a USB device and that it will now look for the drivers. If Windows
can't find the driver, steer it towards your CDROM...

When you boot, check to see that the legacy usb/usb keyboard/mouse or
similar options are turned on in the BIOS.

The Device Manager found all the drivers and tells me that mouse is working.
I removed the mouse drivers and the USB controller drivers in the SAFE mode.
They reinstalled well. But nothing changed.

I looked at the BIOS as you suggested.

On chip USB v1.1+v2
USB keyboard disabled
Enhance USB compatibility Enabled

I changed the USB keybord setting. It did not solve the problem.

It could just be a dead mouse. Is it OEM or retail packaged version? I'd
contact the appropriate party and ask for help at this point.

I set one up for someone, some time ago, and ISTR that there was an
application CD that came with the wireless mouse. Getting the drivers
running wasn't enough. But it was the end of a very lomg day and my
memory may be faulty.

I also say this because I've had absolutely no issues with my logitech
wireless mouse even running it through an inexpensive KVM switch with
emulation.

Isn't there a button on the bottom of the mouse, and on the receiver, that
you push so they establish a connection? The device manager will find the
mouse because it finds the receiver, the problem is the receiver finding the
mouse.

How does the mouse get it's power ? Maybe the battery's dead.

Now THAT would be funny!

More than funny for me-- actually it was a warm fuzzy when some one GAVE me an
almost brand new wireless Logitech KB and mouse . "Won't work"... some idiot
put AAA batts in both and used scotch tape to keep them from rattling (AAA's
just don't work well in AA battery wells..)

I blame Bill Gates when those sorts of people get on the Internet...and
start posting...*shudder*

Thanks for all your help.

I had two problems:

1. Specific software was not installed.

Nothing came with the Microsoft mouse. I believed everything was
included
with Windows XP. Solution : Software easy to find on Knowledge Base.
Thanks Al Dykes.

2. I did not press the connect channel button.

Never knew about that button. Solution : Very simple. Thanks Billy_Bat.

Great support from all. Thank you
Bob
