i have just tried to install a second dvd writer as i
have been given one that was no longer required they are
both matshita sw 9581 drives and no matter what i do i
can't get xp to recognise the new drive as a dvd writer
it will allow playback of cd/dvd but not write dvd. xp
recognises the drive correctly. i have put the drive in
various locations on both ide busses as masters and
slaves or both masters on each bus but nothing seems to
allow me to write to the new drive. the drive was ok
prior to going into my machine. anyone had similar probs.
i know its unusual to have two writers but when you are
given anothe drive i thought i might as well replace my
cd dive and have two dvd's

You need to have a 3rd party DVD writing software. The built-in XP CD
writing software does not create DVDs. The next version of Windows
(Longhorn) should allow to write DVDs.

Windows XP does allow multiple writer drivers. You can not use both units
at the same time.

Karl, go to My Computer and right click the drive and look at the
properties. There is a recording tab, see if it's set to record.

Have you tried just hooking the "new" writer where the old one was to see if
it works there? That is, same IDE, same jumper setting, etc. There may be
something wrong with the writer.
