Installing a new motherboard

In the near future I would like to upgrade my
motherboard. Last year I had to install a new
motherboard after the previous one was damaged. When I
installed the current motherboard, I was forced to
reinstall Windows XP. I am hoping that this was due to a
corrupted file caused by the motherboard damage and not
an inherent Windows XP issue. Does anyone know of this
type of issue regarding Windows XP?

Hi,

It is the XP feature. You need to perform a REPAIR install of XP after the changing of mobo and you also need to re-activate windows and update all the patches and SP1.

Windows XP activation requires that changes in the system
are monitored. Also, changing the motherboard often means
that the drivers for the new motherboard are not present on
the hard drive so Windows will not boot (blue screen).
You do a "repair install" to load the correct drivers for
the new configuration and may have to reactivate if you have
exceeded the trigger point and Windows detects a "new
computer."

My method is to only buy SIS chipset motherboards. I have changed amoung
645, 645DX and 648 motherboards and have not had to re-install WinXP. An
added bonus is SIS chip set MB's never seem to have the trouble VIA chip set
seem prone to.
