I have an IBM Think Pad T20, and I would like to install a new hard drive. Can someone give me a step by step procedure to do this? Do I need to format or partition the drive? How big of a drive can I go. I now have windows 98 on it, do I have to stay with 98 or can I go with XP? Any advice would be appreciated.

As laptops can be quite specific, it would be hard for anyone to give you a step by step guide without knowing that laptop in depth.

I'd suggest checking out the manual that came with the laptop, or download it from the net to find out the max hard drive size that it can handle. From that point, you should be able to swap it over and install a new operating system (WinXP if you have 256Mhz+ and 64MB Ram+). Do bear in mind that you will have to backup your old data and then move it across, as you will lose any information when swapping drives over.

Ok thanks Ian. Will I have to worry about the drivers for the monitor, modem and whatever or will XP take care of this.

Hi,
It is some time since you posted your query. I am in a similar predicament. Did you succeed in your task? If so, do you mind sharing your experience at the forum as I would be keen to know how to do this stuff.

Regards,
Kishore.

Gskishere, what I ended up doing was buying the larges hard drive I could get for the laptop and installing it. I have a setup disk for my loptop and it did all the work for me. It formatted the new drive and installed Windows 98 onto it. I think I'll stay with Windows 98.
