Hi,

I experienced major problems with my system so I took it to the local repair
shop. They said it had contracted a worm and would need a new hard drive.
I don't really want to pay their high installation charges so I have
purchased a cheap 40gig drive myself and would like some advice on how to
install it.

Thanks in advance for your help. It will be much appreciated.

1) a worm will not damage a hdd, if it was a worm then your old hdd is
fine, just format it and install the OS, that is if a antivirus
scanner can't remove it or repair the damage. I would avoid that
repair shop in the future, they're either incompetent or trying to
trick you into paying unnecessarily.

2) install the drive by screwing it in, set the jumper per channel
position, plug it in, set bios to autodetect, partition and format it.
Instructions should also be available fromt the manufacturer's website
or on the 'net via Google search.

Sure you have been tricked, but at least, there is one good point, that is
you now have a second hard drive, which will allow you to have a dedicated
drive for your data, and also to make back-ups of your system files.
Take the fastest drive as your C (probably the new one) and the old one as D
(or E or F if you want to partition your C drive). Set the C drive as master
on the first IDE bus and the second drive as slave on the same bus if the
second bus is occupied by CD and/or CD-RW.
As Kony said, format both drives.
