Computer has 40GB HDD. OS is XP pro.
Now, I want to install a second Hard Disc for installing windows 98 and
Linux.
I don't want to install these OS in my present Hard Disc.
I have been told that if I install 2nd hard disc it will act as slave and
because
of this I will not be able to boot and access windows 98 or Linux from 2nd
hard disc.
Further I was told that, standard procedure is to upgrade, i.e. one should
install xp over windows 98 and not vice versa.
Does it also apply if the OS is installed in 2nd hard disc.

I hope I have made myself clear. I will be very much grateful if somebody
helps in solving my problem.
TIA.

Yes. The older operating system needs to be installed first so the newer
one can detect it when it is installed. You can also use Partition Magic.
A dual boot setup may not be necessary, however.

Consider using the new Microsoft Virtual PC 2004. Using VPC, you can run
Win98 as a virtual computer right on your XP Pro desktop. You can drag and
drop files between them, network, etc.

The difference in cost between VPC and Partition Magic is not very much and
with VPC you can run many operating systems in addition to Win98, including
Linux.

You should have at least 384mb ram since both the XP and Win98 computers
will be running at the same time. There are no reboots involved in
switching from one to the other. You just use a mouse click.

Use a boot manager to switch between drives. BootIt NG is a good choice

You can use a boot manger. Or do what I do. I have my hard drives
removeable and keep win98 on one and winxp on the other. This way if I lose
a HD I don't lose both systems. Of coarse you need a case with an extra
5.25 bay
