On Win XP Home, is it possible to install 2 ISP programs (from CD's) on the
same PC? A friend wants both AT&T and AOL on his new Dell PC and I'm
thinking if we just install both programs it will work fine, but I want to
check before maybe making a big mistake.
Thank you

Do you NEED the AT&T CD? Can you not set up the dial-up manually?

Well, he has the CD for AT&T and already has an account with them.
Basically, for some reason, he wants both AT&T and AOL. The AOL comes free
for 6 months w/ the PC and he wants to try it out, but keep his AT&T active
in case he doesn't like AOL.

Hi CB,

Sure you can, but why would you want to? It will just create two
connectoids, you will need to set one as the default connection, and
manually switch to the other when you want it. As Gordon has hinted, you may
not need to install the AT&T software, you may simply be able to setup your
own connectoid using their settings (this isn't possible with AOL's garbage,
you must use their interface). Generally, you will find that ISP-supplied
CD's also have a tendency to install "extra's" and "brand" some of your
software.

I don't know why he wants AOL on his PC, since he seems to be happy with
AT&T, other than he knows people who use AOL and it's a "freebie" that comes
with the PC. AOL claims the 1st 6 months are "free" but I've told him ain't
nothin free. He paid for that too when he bought the PC.
OK, I'll see about manually setting up his AT&T account, then using the
online registration that came pre-installed on his PC for AOL. Seems like a
lot of work for a not-so-great ISP.

if that's the only reason for installing AOL, then NO, No, NO! Don't! It
messes ALL sorts of things up, including dailers, the lot!

Thanks!! I'll forward this on to him. Hopefully, he will be sensible. If
not, then I'll tell him to get someone else to mess things up.

Thanks again, I appreciate this

A warning with AOL - he will be required to supply a credit/debit card or
checking account number at the time the account is setup. AOL WILL charge
him if he is not careful to call and close the account before the expiration
date. AOL is VERY stingy about refunding anything they have charged, the
procedure to dispute is extremely lengthy (done intentionally to discourage
people from trying to use it). AOL also is known to conveniently "forget" to
stop automatic charges even when an account has been properly closed. Trust
me, as a person who works in the banking industry and has seen this
innumerable times, they should be avoided at all "costs" (pun intended).
