installin winxp on compaq

i have trouble installing windows on my compaq computer,
i install the windows xp but still nothin showing just
black screen, please sombody give me an answer on this

I suppose the monitor _is_ switched on?
(No, don't laugh, I know someone who did this!)

What kind of Compaq? Does it have exotic hardware?
 
Did you run the Windows XP Upgrade Advisor to see if your hardware and
software are XP compatible? Which XP, Home or Pro? Describe the
installation procedure that you used, upgrade or clean install.
