I really think Microsoft could improve on thier installer
for this program. The download box pops up and it cannot
be moved. The installation wizard does not recognize
resolution settings.(too large for screen). Each new
addition installs a new shortcut folder in programs and a
new icon on the desktop.

"download box"?? What "download box"? There is no download involved in the
MSAS installer. Are you sure that you are dealing with Microsoft
AntiSpyware Beta 1, and not some other application?

I have not see this. What resolution is your screen?

I have not seen this - in fact I see the opposite: re-installation will
overwrite the old Start menu and desktop icons.

Are you sure there is not something wrong with your Windows system?

He is referring to the dialog that slides up above the
system tray (same position an Outlook notification of a new
email appears), prompting the user to upgrade to a new
version of MSAS.

It's true that this upgrade dialog is not from the MSAS
installer -- it's from a running copy of MSAS itself.

I have seen the same thing. In fact, I just reported it as
an issue to MS, which is what then brought me to this
newsgroup. My resolution is 800x600 (yes, my PC sucks),
and when the MSAS installer starts, the upgrade dialog is
still on the screen. And it is always-on-top.

Now, I just dragged the MSAS installer window to the upper
left corner of the screen (it was still obscured -- the two
windows simply do not fit together on an 800x600 screen --
but it is possible to complete the installation). So, to
me, this was just a UE glitch, an annoyance.

But since arriving in this newsgroup, I've seen at least
two messages from other users who had this problem, and one
of them (see the message "CAN NOT INSTALL" from "WILLIAM
KIRK") was apparently stopped by it.

The MSAS team should test the upgrade/install process at
800x600, and maybe even 640x480. I wonder if it would even
be possible to run the install with Windows booted into
"Safe Mode with Networking", yet that's not at all an
unreasonable use case.

I think a big part of the problem is that the upgrade
dialog is always-on-top. I've played with creating "slide
up" notifications, and although I'm no expert, I think the
best combination I found was to mark the window unfocusable
and bring it to the front, but NOT mark it always-on-top.
Or, if being always-on-top is needed (at first, anyway), it
should relinquish the always-on-top status after it
finishes the download and before it spawns the installer.

Lest anyone get the wrong impression, I'm a big fan of
MSAS. I think it's the best anti-spyware software going.
I'm sure they'll have these kinks worked out before it
leaves beta.

Regards,
Dave Conrad

P.S. I've got a nice screenshot of the two dialogs battling
for real estate on my desktop, if anyone wants to see it.
