I have a Sony Vaio, and in checking with the MS Update
site, I read the alerts and warnings re: the Blaster worm
and what to do, etc. I downloaded the update 823980 after
reading the system requirements and checking the
properties page in my System folder (Windows XP Home
Edition 2002 Service Pack 1). When I went to install the
update, tne Sony Installer kicked in and did it's own
install, then proceded to install the update, but a
message popped up saying it could not read the data from
the source. Do I not need the update, or should I
download it again and let it install at that time instead
of saving it to do later?
Another problem has 'popped up' starting yesterday - I
keep getting these windows that have "Messenger Service"
in the title bar, and they are saying "Security Alert"
about how my internet address is being broadcast, etc.
They tell me to click on the ok - it won't take me to the
site listed, but that I should write the name of the site
down to go to later. Is there any way to stop those? Can
I use a proxy server to hide my address if I am using a
dial-up internet connection and McAfee Personal Firewall
as well as the Windows firewall?
Nothing like a machine to show you how ignorant you really
are!
