Major problem: I recently installed McAfee virus scan, which seemed to stall
out - it told me to uninstall other virus scan software first (I have none,
just a couple of anti-spyware programs) and finally nothing was working and I
restarted. Now, I'm trying to install Adobe Acrobat and the windows installer
won't work. It just gets stuck, and finally I cancel and I get a message
saying "Install server not responding."

Other glitches I've noticed:
Disk Cleanup isn't working - it stalls out in tabulating the contents of my
computer when it gets to Microsoft Office.

Additionally, I can't turn the windows firewall. When I try to click on it
in the control panel, I get a message saying "Windows installer not working."

Also, I can't click on "System" in the control panel.

Any thoughts on what might be causing any or all of this?

I'd start with a generic malware scan to be honest.
