I have machine running Windows 2000 Server that has a
missing registry key that is, apparently preventing the
installation of some software. The missing key is
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Pr
oducts. The situation is as follows:
We had a system disk crash and, of course, had to
reinstall everything. In the new configuration the system
drive is now the G: drive instead of C:. (This may not be
relevant.) I was running Symantec AntiVirus verion 8.0
client on the machine but cannot reinstall it. I get a
message, "An error has occurred that prevents this
installation from continuing". The Symantec KB says to
look at this key and assure that certain account have
access to it and the key is not there.
I have msiexec.exe version 2.0 on the machine and have
tried to register it using the /regserver option and the
Products key still does not appear. I have similar
machines in my shop that have the key and the Symantec
product installs OK on them.
What is the problem? How can I fix it?
