Installed XP 03 over XP SP1, Fatal error. Help

I bought the upgrade version of Windows XP 2003 for my
father-in-law (lives 500 miles away) and sent it to him.
Then remembered his computer might not have enough space
for the upgrade. I called and he told me he had Windows
XP Service pack 1 on I think an IBM 386. I told him not
to install it that he didn't have enough space but he did
it anyway. Now when he boots up it acts like its going
to start gets a blue screen and then gets an error
message saying ... fatal error has occurred. He tried
the hotfix but it didn't work. He does not have Windows
XP Service pack 1 on a disk. Is there anything we can do
or does he need a new disk to reinstall and what version
of XP would be appropiate?
Thanks for your help
Lisa

1. There is no such thing as Windows XP 2003 (there is a Server 2003, is that what you bought?)
2. No way on gods green earth is ANY version of XP going to run on a 386, no matter how much free space the hard drive has.
3. Where did the SP1 load come from that he was running?
