I'm running 2000 Pro on a Dell P-3 at 1 GHZ. Last night
the automatic update feature installed new stuff and now
the computer will not boot. It gets through about two-
thirds of the second progress bar (the one on the first
color screen) and then stops. Ctrl-Alt-Del has no effect.
Attempts to use the startup options screen do not work.
I cannot turn the computer off -- I must use the reset
button or just disconnect it.

One other thing... during the same session in which the
updates were installed, I also installed the new iTunes
software from Apple, though I did not open or use it.

Any ideas?

I am having the same problem. As soon
as I installed the October 15, 2003
MS Windows 2000 Security Updates, it immediately started
to take 3-5 attempts to get Windows 2000
Professional with Service Pack 4 running
before I can get it installed.

What happens is that the machine hangs
either during the loading of the lower
right hand tray icons or during the painting
of the icons on the desk top.

Attempts to use CTRL ALT DEL causes all of
the icons and windows screen elements except
the background picture to go away.
Then the power switch must be used to turn
off the machine as it is completely stuck and
will go no further.

This is extremely frustrating!!! How
can this be solved????

Hi Alexander,

I think its a bug when patches are applied.
I solved here by adding the administrator´s account to Backup Operator´s
group.
It enable the ShutDown and Restart options again.
After booting, I removed the administrator account from backup operators
group.
