Hey everybody! I have (had?) an emachines computer that has xp installed and
it worked great. I have a cable hook up and the kids are constantly picking
up pop spyware. Adaware helped, but I would go into the temporary internet
file everyday and delete everything. The other night i was fed up, (and dead
tired) so i downloaded spybot (search and destroy) from pcworld's site. I
backed up all my old settings or files (i'm not mr computer, but i'm not
stupid...maybe a little) but i didnt save the settings or files on a
removable disk. One thing lead to another and the computer had to be shut
down and restarted. Upon restarting, windows xp was unable to restart. I
pressed F8 during the next restart to get more options and nothing would
respond. I was stuck in this screen. I searched high and low for the
recovery cd or disks that i think came with the machine but found nothing.
With a graduation party on my mind (had over 100 people over for food and
drinks for my daughters graduation and not a whole went right, rain...
anyway, BABY I WAS STRESSED!!) so I dropped the non functioning computer off
at a reputable repair and recovery service dealer. I haven't anything from
them yet, but how bad does this sound? will i lose all my files???

Before you took it to the repair shop, recovery would have been very
likely. Now, it's unsure. Many repair shops simply do a reinstall.

In the future, download and install Spyware Blaster. It is a free
program that places a bunch of web sites and ad sites in the restricted
section of IE, Netscape, or Mozilla browsers. It doesn't scan your
registry, files or anything else. It's a pretty safe piece of software.

After you update and run Spyware Blaster, run Ad-Aware or SpamBot Search
& Destroy. As long as you keep Spyware Blaster updated, the other
programs should rarely receive a hit. I haven't in over 6 months.

Thanks for the info Courtney. I called the repair center yesterday and they
had a set of recovery disks and got xp to load. They wanted to know what
files i needed backed up before they reinstalled xp (corrupted files... duh)
.. I pointed out that if they were to go to the spybot program that screwed
things up, they could restore my old configuration because i backed it up on
the hard drive. If not save ALL my crap, i told them. Should get it back
today. I cleaned out my old pb desktop and it's working okay for the time
being. Valuable lesson learned here, dont mess with things when you're not
sure and when you're too tired to pay attention.
thanks again for the response.
