Installed SP3 on Aug 31. Everything was fine but now when ever I try to
access my files either through explorer, IE, FireFox, Outlook, Thunderbird,
etc it will crash whatever program I'm trying to access them with. For
instance say I'm trying to upload a file to the Internet, after I click
browse and search through my files my web browser will crash or say I'm just
searching through my folders explorer will crash. This has made my computer
absolutely useless. I uninstalled SP3 and also restored my PC to an early
date. It still has this problem. Please help.

If you uninstalled SP3 and you still have the issue - sounds like it was
unrelated to SP3.

Considering it happen after SP3? I think not.

Has anyone else come across this issue? I reinstalled SP3 disabling all
programs (antivirus, firewall, etc) still have the issue. Also, it seems to
only crash when looking at the files in Thumbnail view. Please help thank you.

Considering that you have the problem even if SP3 was uninstalled,
it sounds like it is not related.
I'd run the mfg's herddrive diagnostic
and also a RAM test

It is not the hardware as nothing changed but installing SP3. Also you are
not being helpful. Thus I ask you to stop replying. If my HD was bad I would
have bigger problems.

The issue is this: After installing SP3 (and I have it currently installed)
folders that display thumbnails crash explorer or any other program that
displays the folder contents in thumbnail view.

Sorry. I think you are trying to make a connection that does not seem to be
there...
If you uninstalled SP3 - are still experiencing the issue - it is not
related to SP3.

If you wish to be sure it has nothing to do with SP3 - use System Restore to
restore your computer to a date before you even attempted to install SP3.
That should restore all system files to whatever date you choose.

What people are attempting to tell you is this may be coincidental.

there isn't really anything
of great value in sp3.

however, since it is a file
that was downloaded onto
your disk, then perhaps
you are having a simple
issue with the file system.

it is unclear if you keep
your disk and file system
tuned up'd.

firstly, i would uninstall any
anti virals you have
temporarily, then run
a chkdsk.

you might also want
to run this:

if the above doesn't
help, then you can
repair your o.s.:

OK so after some research I think the problem is solved.

Solution:

There is a problem with the MPEGSPLITTER.AX codec which causes explorer to
crash when loading thumbnails. So rename MPEGSPLITTER.AX to MPEGSPLITTER.BAX.
If you need the codec again you can rename it back.

What does that have to do with SP3?

And the error code for these crashes is?

Jim,

The original poster came back to say they fixed their issue...

However - they have not explained how that had anything to do with SP3 nor
have they offered any apologies about 'jumping on' those suggesting that it
was not an SP3 issue...

*shrug*

I guess it was something else they had done recently and did not recall
doing.

Becausen he noticed the issue after he had installed SP3. ;-)

What I would like to know is when OP installed K-Lite Codec Pack
(apparently the file he mentions is part of it)... Hopefully, the newest
version doesn't produce the same behavior. Then again, I never use
thumbnails, so I'd never have noticed...

As everyone here told you...
it was not an SP3 issue...
but at least I'm glad you figured it out!

Thanks for posting back with the solution
