Can having a large number of installed programs slow the computer down?

Only Zonealarm, Propel Accelerator & Antiviris load at startup.
I have used msconfig to uncheck other programs like Nero Burner who want to
have something "alive".
And how many 'running processes' is normal for XP Pro?

Yes. When they are running. The case that software is installed alone
will not slow down anything.

Depends. I have 33 at this moment with a bunch of programs running at
this time.
