I was asked by my church to replace a dot matrix printer
that is used to print labels. I was looking at the
Epson FX-890. There's also an FX-890N which is network
ready. The latter is about $120 more.

Is there an advantage of getting the network ready model
or would an external print server like a Netgear PS110
or D-Link DP-300U be better?

I have never set up a printer on a network so I don't
know the pros/cons.

Thanks...

A manufacturer-included print server could better support features of
the printer. I have seen an equivalent Okidata impact printer which
required non-default parallel port settings on an HP JetDirect.

Unless you have some special labels, you should probably look at
low-cost lasers. For example, you can get the HP LaserJet 2015dn for
$350 right now. It'll print cut-sheet labels faster and quieter than
the Epson impact printer, and has a built-in print server.

Hi Warren.

Yes, we print about 5,000 continuous labels at a time and
use a device that labels envelopes, newsletters, etc.

Thanks for your answers.
