Installations Fail - Possible Installation in Process & Hung

I have been unsuccessful installing a couple of new applications. They
simply quit before starting to write files onto my hard drive.

I have attempted to "repair" my Windows 2000 Professional installation in
the hopes of clearing up any system errors but when trying to start the Win2k
installation procedure, I am notified that another program is in the midst of
being installed, log off, log back on and wait for the unfinished
installation procedure to finish before proceding. I have no other
installation in process that I can tell. I believe this problem is the root
of my original problem when trying to install applications. How can I repair
this situation?

Thanks,

JimS

Hi,

Have you tried restarting in safemode and then restarting into regular
mode? Maybe an install has hung. Also, look in the registry at the
HKLM-Software-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-RunOnce and RunOnceEX.

Delete anything in there except the default. This is where an install
puts files it wants run after reboot.

You can also do CTRL-ALT-DEL and look at the process running to see if
any look like an install you have done.

Thank you both but I am still having problems after following all advice.
There IS one key listed in
HKLM-Software-Microsoft-Windows-CurrentVersion-RunOnce for SymTray - Norton
SystemWorks at C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Symtrdr.exe . I
have tried deleting this entry but after a reboot it reappears. There are no
other keys in any other RunOnce... folder. After deleting this key (both
before and after rebooting) the applications I am trying to install as well
as the Win2k Pro installation process all quit just as before.

I am researching whether the Norton key is purposely in the aforementioned
folder to start a necessary task or if this is in fact a culprit that might
be causing my problem. I'm trying to get advice from Symantec about this.

What I find odd is that I could install Quicken 2005 without a problem but
am unable to install TurboTax 2004. The two installation procedures appear
to use different programs to perform their installation procedures. I'm
trying to get an answer from Intuit, too.

Any other recommendations?

You said nothing about the location I pointed you to in that artcle. Have you looked at it and seen nothing there? It has nothing to do with Run keys.

Have you actually checked your link George? It comes up with a
"The Requested Web Page is Not Available" everytime.

Hi,

Shared\Symtrdr.exe

I have Symantec Systemworks 2002 and have no Symtrdr.exe anywhere on
my computer. I also did a search on Symantec’s site and found nothing
about Symtrdr.exe which is weird. However, I have had serious
problems with Symantec products messing my machine up if they get
messed up during install. The app is "waiting" to run or trying to
run and stops all other apps.

On doing installs I have noticed that some installs will let you run
them simultaneously with others and some won’t. It sounds like an
install has just not completed.

Just out of curiousity have you done a complete Virus and spywhere
search to rule that out?

What is the specific error?

Cheers,

Lara
