When I try to install XP it gets to the point where it says "Starting
Windows" - and never does! I have to close it down reboot and then start it
in 98. Anyone any idea why?

.
I would try deleting the existing partition that contains
the Win98 data during the installation process for WinXP.

When you first insert the WinXP disc it will lead you to
a blue screen.

At this screen it will ask you a few questions and you
will answer accordingly; yes I want a fresh install...bla
bla bla.

When it gets to the part that asks whether or not you want
to delete the partition or not, say yes by slecting the
C:\ drive (or whatever drive you have Win98 stored on) and
pressing the corrispoding key that will delete the
partition.

If it asks you if you are sure, say yes by hitting the
right key and it will take you to the previous screen
where you should now see that the drive has been erased
and that their is no partition remaining.

Now you will have to create a partition by reading the
instructions on the screen...press the correct key and the
partion will be created. (Use the NTFS type partition)

After creating the partition, follow the instructions that
enable you to create a new copy of Windows XP.

Not to hard but good luck!

XP Upgrade

If you can't get updated bios for your motherboard, XP may not install.

Before you begin the upgrade process, obtain and install the latest BIOS
upgrade for your computer from the computer's manufacturer. If you update
the BIOS after you upgrade the computer, you may have to reinstall Windows
XP to take advantage of features such as Advanced Configuration and Power
Interface (ACPI) support in the BIOS. If possible, update the firmware in
all of your hardware devices before you start the upgrade.
