Hi,
I have 2 computers. One is a newer desktop that I built, and one is an
older laptop from dell.
I started to reformat/reinstall on my dell, only to realize I was using the
newer xp disc. (both have xp, although the dell is xp sp1, and the newer one
is sp2) Now I can't find the older disc.

I entered the serial from my dell when installing, and it installed, but
would not activate.

My question is: can I install xp on my dell, since I own 2 legal licenses,
but only possess one disc?
Any advice?
Please?
Thanks in advance.

Your Dell disk was likely the reinstallation CD that contains an OEM version
of XP with a tweak or two. The COA on your laptop corresponds to the OEM
software.

If you purchased your new copy of XP when you purchased the parts for your
new PC I'm guessing you purchased a retail or upgrade version of XP. The
license key for these versions aren't compatible with the OEM version that
came with your laptop.

However! Working under the assumption that you purchased a retail (box)
version of XP than I believe you are licensed to isntall XP on your desktop
and laptop using the license key that came with the new disk. Both PCs
should activate just fine.

If you prefer to use separate licenses you will need to contact Dell and
order the reinstallation CD for your PC.

Good luck,

Po
