Ben

Hi, I'm trying to reinstall w2k pro on a system, I boot
from the cd, but after it finishes loading lots of stuff,
and saying 'setup is starting windows 2000' the screen goes
black with lots of weird colored lines and stuff...

Its not my cd cause I tried it on another machine and it
works fine. Its not the drive im installing to as I'ved
tried it on 3 different drives in the same machine. It also
isn't my cdrom as ive tested on 2 different ones...

I'm guessing it must be some other hardware in the machine
that is causing probs at the setup? don't really understand
how that could happen...
I'm using an athlon thunderbird 1.2ghz on an ABIT KT7 with
512 sdram. other stuff in the machine is a Geforce4, some
random 100mb network card, a scsi card... thats about it.

Anyone ever come across a probleme lik this?

You didn't mention the drive controller (possibly SCSI, or ultra DMA, or
ATA100, or raid, or serial ATA), but you may need to boot the Windows 2000
setup disks or CD-Rom and *F6* very early and very important (at setup is
inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller detection,
and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to
insert the manufacturer supplied Windows 2000 driver for your drive's
controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

Sound likes video card. Usually, after loading, system
reboot and come up with VGA mode to finish up the rest of
installation.

1- use another video card and see if it change.
2- get the right driver
3- set 256 color and a low resolution

Good luck!

Hi Ben

How up to date is the BIOS on the machine, I know that there can be an issue
with W2K on some old Bios set-up's, use the make and model of you
motherboard in order to check how old it is, take a note of the bios string
and update it from the manufacturer's site ! Just an idea !
