Installation Question

I have recently purchased a computer running XP SP2. when I try to run my
PowerPoint 2003 upgrade CD, I'm not able to open the installed program. Only
PowerPoint 2002 installs correctly. I'm concerned there may be some type of
conflict with other program resources but I'm not sure what to do to resolve
it. I've reinstalled the Office files several times.

Can anyone help. Thank you.

Since 2003 is an upgrade, when you install, at some point it tells you it's
looking for a qualifying product. You should be able to put the 2002 disk in
then, point the 2003 upgrade to it, and then go on with the 2003 upgrade
installation.

My guess is you don't have a qualifying product, so 2003 won't run.

However, if you have both 2002 and 2003 upgrade installed on the system,
well, then I'm way wrong!

If that's the case, how are you trying to open PPT 2003? What happens when
you do that?

I have both installed. 2002 works. I then install the upgrade to 2003. It
says it's successful. However, when I try to open the application, it opens
briefly, a popup window states "preparing to install" and then it closes out
without any further message. I've installed this on my old computer and it
worked. very strange.

thanks for any help you can give.

Okay, do me a favor -- after you try to start PPT 2003 and it shows the
popup, hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and look on the processes tab. Do you see
powerpnt.exe in the list there?

Do you have any add-ins installed for PPT? Here's how you can check:

What add-ins are loaded?
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00655.htm

Also, how are you opening PPT -- are you using Start | Programs and the
shortcut there, or are you double-clicking a PPT file in My Documents or
what?

Yes I do see it. I don't believe there are any add-ins. I reinstalled office
twice and tried opening PPT in safe mode. (couldn't find the link for further
assistance on this)
I've tried opening PPT from a file, the start up menu and the application
folder and have had the same result.

Okay, then if you see powerpnt.exe in the list, it is running. It's just not
showing up.

Rather than relying on "I don't believe" with regard to add-ins, please run
through the options listed in that FAQ. There are a lot of things that have
their hooks into PPT that you may not think of, or even realize. Adobe
Acrobat, for one example. Various translation tools for another. SnagIt and
Camtasia for a third and fourth. There's just a whole bunch of
possibilities, and one of them may be causing the problem.
