I have reinstalled Vista Ultimate 32 bit 2 times today because I thought I
had a virus. I can't get a stable install. I get Vista installed and then
start to install my programs when it hangs. Here's what I did....

After installation I installed Avast AV. Restarted, got connected and went
to install my soundcard. As soon I clicked install I went into a loop or
something. Nothing but the hourglass or whatever in Vista. I manually
shutdown and decided to try the built-in soundcard. The other was a USB. As
soon as I clicked anything I go to never, neverland. I can't get out of it
unless I manually restart. This is the reason I reformatted to begin with.
After restarting I go in to this loop or whatever whenever click anything.
Anyone have any idea what might be happening? Thanks.

Addendum: This was a clean install both times. Completely reformatted the
drive both times and used bootrec to clean my master boot record. Did that
twice, hope it worked. I've been using Vista Ultimate 32 bit and 64 bit for
1 1/2 years and I'm thinking of going back to XP. I've never had a problem
like this before with Vista.

The first thing to do after a fresh install is to update your drivers, such
as your video driver.

Thanks for the reply, Gary. I thought it was my 2 soundcards causing the
problem so I turned off the onboard soundcard in the bios. I then installed
the other soundcard and it installed fine. Restarted and it hangs as soon as
I start doing anything. It's hard to update drivers when the system won't
stay stable enough to let you.

It seems to be stable again. All seems well but I look for it to go nuts at
any given moment. That's the way it was on the previous install.
