Hi, i cant seem to get vista to install after numerous trys.
My PC is certainly compatible and ive run the upgrade advisor and it shows
no imediate problems.

everytime i install, after it finishes installing a blank screen comes up
with a blinking underscore, after a while it restarts and undoes the changes
and tells me it was unsucessful.

Hello,
Can you capture the setupact.log and setuperr.log file that is on your
system after the failure?
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setupact.log
C:\$WINDOWS.~BT\Sources\Panther\setuperr.log
send to be me, remove the online.
Thanks,

Hi, i am doing a clean install, first i tried 4 times on my partition and
then i partitioned off 20 gb specifically for vista and that failed the same
as previous attempts.

I personally suggest two things. Before you started this process, your hard
drive was not set to dynamic, was it? Mine was, and I had the same issues
you're having...

In addition, disconnect ALL accessories, i.e. usb items. So, all that should
be left is, power, keyboard, mouse, and monitor. If doing an upgrade
uninstall anti virus software, and CD burning software, then try again. I
bet it works then...

Yep, it is all pretty sad.

I have an almost 'state of the art' newer high end computer with tons
of HD space. Until now, it runs anything and everything I've thrown at
it. I've built and assembled my last 8 computers so I'm not exactly
new at working with operating systems. And of course the current
computer with XP Pro easily passes any VISTA compatibility tests.
But VISTA is an entirely new and frustrating experience.
Regarding VISTA, I've gone from enthusiastic and "I can
hardly wait" to absolute disgust. If I were Bill Gates
and was tired of having all that money and success, I'd do what
he is doing and end it all with the release of a truly uninstallable
or unusable operating system.
On my computer, VISTA installs fairly well until it "re-sets" the
screen to a font size that appears to be consistent with my 1920 x
1200 default screen resolution, then goes into a reboot cycle
from which nothing short of "pull the power plug" will recover.
There is no advice. There are no helpful messages, in fact no
messages whatsoever. After a few minutes of this reboot frustration,
I actually expected a happy face to pop up on my screen with a
message:
"Ha Ha, I have your $400 and you just got f__ked by Microsoft."

But alas, I didn't even get that much.

Hi Navilyn, thanks for your reply. Im pretty sure im not using dynamic though
when you say dynamic do you mean discs spanned over mulitple drives?

I will try your suggestions though and unplug all peripherals apart from
those that are needed.

When you go to Disk Management, you can change any hard drive from 'basic'
to 'dynamic'. Dynamic gives you more options (but one has to manually change
it), and if your drive is dynamic it seems to cause issues loading /
installing Vista...

I thought I had issues installing Vista! I hope yours gets resolved quickly.
Did you, too, try to install with NO accessories attached? I've seen online
that that seems to be a major thing in Vista not installing, or not
installing at all...

Heya, thanks again for the reply.
I see what you mean now about dynamic and all my drives seem to be set as
basic. Im about to give it another go taking into account everything you
said, ill let you know what happens when its over.

Hello,

That will increase the amount of SPAM mail someone gets.

Hi again. This time doing what you said it managed to install kind of.

Once the install had finished i got the blank screen the the blinking
underscore as usual but then something that didnt happen at all before was i
got a blue screen.

PC restarts and also which didnt happen before, it didnt undo changes and
left vista installed, it seems to boot vista fine, loading screen etc but
everytime before it gets to log in screen it crashes and i get a blue screen.

If i try to go to vista in safe mode it loads up fine but before i get into
it a message says you cant complete the vista installation in safe mode.

Oh sorry about that, didnt understand what you meant by "send to be me,
remove the online."

ive added some extra info in this thread about my problem, i think youve
received the setupact.log.

I thought I had issues installing Vista! I hope yours gets resolved quickly.
Did you, too, try to install with NO accessories attached? I've seen online
that that seems to be a major thing in Vista not installing, or not
installing at all...

Microsoft made major changes in how the new operating system gets
installed. Unlike XP and prior versions were the conventional wisdom
was to turn everything on (printer, scanner, external drives etc..)
before attempting a install, so Windows could "see it", it is now best
to turn everything off and if you can, uninstall what isn't absolutely
necessary to boot and have mimimal control. In other words, only
connect your keyboard, none USB hopefully, a mouse or some kind of
pointing device (I prefer a trackball) and for hard drives switch them
to IDE mode if you can from BIOS. Also just have your root drive
(likely C) as the only drive if possible for starters to avoid more
issues. If you only have a single SATA drive and you boot from that,
you may be up the creek without a paddle. The potential for receiving
a BSOD error early on in the install process, likely at the 21% marker
is petty high. Ditto for many other drivers Vista don't like.

If the Vista Upgrade Advisor even hints there may be something wrong
disable whatever that device is before to avoid common BSOD screens
during install. A 7B stop is more common then it should be.

Once up, then put back your goodies one at a a time and change back to
SATA mode ONLY if you have approved and certified SATA ready drivers,
otherwise you could end up back at square one again.

As far as the video problem, try to reboot into safe more during post
(hold down F8), then if successful go to device manager, find the
video card, REMOVE the drivers, reboot. Windows should install some
generic crap, that at least allows your in until you can obtain VISTA
drivers from some place OTHER THAN Microsoft... of course.

If you're more the river boat gambler type and can't wait for Vista
approved drivers, many webs sites already have lists of XP drivers
that supposedly work, but were held back by Microsoft from the offical
release of the Vista DVD which apparently was blinded to them, every
if they are already on your system due to licensing issues. This may
explain the excess number of devices being rejected by the Vista
Upgrade advice and the false claim it "don't know" about the device it
is nagging about. One such site follows:

http://windowssecrets.com/vista/

If you see your device on the above list or others you likely will
have to attempt to manually install the driver or just wait till a
Vista approved version is released.

Adam,

If I read you correctly, Microsoft changed the install process (and
thus created) these install problems / restrictions / hoops on
purpose. Well, I guess they knew what they wanted ... and it looks
like they got it ... a bunch of confused, disillusioned and unhappy
customers. To me, that seems to be a strange objective for a company
trying to sell product but ... well it is their choice to make I
guess.

Your detailed advice is very thoughtful and even kind. Thank you.
