Hi I get this message when I tried to install Windows XP
Professional - full version. It says: Instation Failed:
D\I386\asms. Error: The volume for a file has been
externally altered so that the opened file is no longer
valid.

Now what? Anyone know what is the matter?

What kind of CD are you using to install? Retail? An OEM CD? A burned copy
of XP? Bad burns of XP CDs often produce an error about various files, asms
being one of the common ones mentioned in the error messages. Solution is
to burn the CD again using more conservative burn settings.

Some cdrom drives with timing problems for large installations will also
produce an error of this type. Solution is to copy the setup files to the
hard drive and run setup from the hard drive.

I've never heard of the "externally altered" warning though. That's a new
one to me.
