Installation problem

Stuart Hall

I have been unable to install two programs in the last week on my machine
under XP professional. I have not had problems before and other programs
have installed without any problem.

The programs in question were the 2.01 patch for Icewind Dale II and Hearts
of Iron. Both exhibit the same problem. The set up begins ok but after the
preliminary questions about installation path etc. and unpacking the
temporary files the progress bar for setup status is displayed but hangs at
0%. Clicking cancel or x on the form has no effect. On ending the process
through task manager a message box is displayed that says "An error occurred
while launching the setup. The remote procedure call failed." I also tried
installing Hearts of Iron in a Windows ME virtual machine I have installed
on the same PC and it proceeded without problems, though I am unable to run
the program in the virtual machine as it lacks the graphics capability.
Running the setup in XP in compatibility mode however was not successful.

Hi Stuart,

I'm not absolutely sure this will solve your installation problem
but since you've already tried compatibility mode, and since I'm
assuming you're installing the patch from and to your local drive
and not experiencing the error as a result of a network drive
connection, then I would certainly suspect a software conflict.

Furthermore, after reading the icewind2.blackisle.com site's faq
I saw the following under system requirements so it's XP compatible.

RECOMMENDED:
Intel Pentium III 500 or AMD Duron or Athlon processor
128MB RAM
DirectX compliant video card
DirectX compliant sound card
16x CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive
Broadband (Cable/DSL) Connection for multiplayer
Windows XP
DirectX 8.0 or higher

RESOLUTION?

1. To see if it's a software conflict: Temporarily disable Startup
programs one at a time, starting with Firewall, Antivirus, and ad
blockers using: http://new.jtsoft2001.com/windows/startup.php

You can lookup what a program does before you disable it here:
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_pages/startup_full.htm

2. Run a virus scan at: http://housecall.antivirus.com Afterwards
Download & Run Spybot from: http://security.kolla.de to find any
Trojans, Adware, or Spyware which could clog up your system.

3. Click My Computer / Rightclick the Drive & Choose Properties
/ Run the "Disk Cleanup..." / Next Click the "Tools" Tab and run
the "Error-Checking" and "Defragmentation" utilities.

4. Go to the Windows Update site for everything under Critical and
Recommended: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com

Hope this helps you Stuart, Icewind Dale II looks like an amazing game! :-)

Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately having ensured all the latest
Windows updates were in place, run a virus scan, cleared out spyware etc.
even with all start-up programs disabled I still experience the same
problem. Any other suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi Stuart,

I'm unsure what solution will succeed in this instance. If you
were able to create a new partition and format it in FAT32
that might eliminate some of the other possible hindrances.

Are you sure you cleared your TEMP directory in step 3?
