I have installed GDI+ in Windows 2000. When I install Windows Defender it
says it can't start a service, please try to start service manually. There
is nothing I can find on how to accomplish this. H E L P

Please check the event log (start->run->Eventvwr) for events from the
service control manager in the system log. There should be an event in for
the WinDefend service.
There's a little "copy" button in the event viewer when you select an event,
if you paste that here, we can probably help.

Joe

I had the same issue while installing Windows Defender yesterday. Here is the
event I had at the time:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 04/13/2006
Time: 04:07:50 PM
User: N/A
Computer: 23NVCFW
Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.

One trick that I did was to change the Log On in the properties of Windows
Defender Service to use my logon credentials instead of Local System. After
that when I tried to manually start the service the message I got was:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 04/14/2006
Time: 11:03:36 AM
User: N/A
Computer: 23NVCFW
Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
General access denied error

Finally I changed the Log On in properties back to Local System account and
after that I was able to manually start the service.

However every time I restarted the computer I had to go thru the same steps
to get the Windows Defender service running. I went back to the previous
build because of this issue.

Here is the error message

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7023
Date: 4/13/2006
Time: 8:36:52 PM
User: N/A
Computer: FBCOFLEX001
Description:
The Windows Defender Service service terminated with the following error:
The system cannot find the file specified.
