I install win2000 advanced server following the "Step by
step guide to a common infrastructure for windows 2000
deployment part 1". I follow the instructions to the
letter (requirements, names, size, etc...). Everything
goes perfect until I get to the "Configuring your server
as a domain controller" final step (step 6). I get a
message "The operation failed with the following error:
The network location cannon be reaced. For imformation
about network troubleshooting, see Windows help.".
I go to "device manager", dm reports "This device is
working properly".
The "network neighborhood properties" appear to be setup
ok.
The station is not connected to any other device on the
network while I install the OS, totally isolated from any
network.

Is this your first W2K Domain controller you are setting
up, if so you will need to have DNS installed and
configured correctly. Once you have installed and
configured DNS you will need to run the DCPROMO command
fron the run command.

Windows 2000 Active Directory Domain controllers require
DNS to be running first before you promote the Server to a
Domain Controller.

I have just done this recently and first I installed the
Server as a member server then installed and configured
DNS making sure your SRV Records in DNS are registered.
One this stage has been completed then run DCPROMO this is
the Active Directory installation wizard that takes you
through the install step by step.
