Installation Problem - Keeps Rebooting

I tried to upgrade from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 Pro. It
has gotten as far as the setup of devices such as mouse
and keyboard and finalizing. Before it saves settings it
restarts the PC and restarts the set up all over again. If
I leave the PC it will do that forever (which I have done,
for over 8 hours). How do I get out of that? Time is
critical... I have several VB programs saved on my hard
drive that I can not access.
Please help a desperate college student get his computer
running!!

upgrades suck, should have backed up before upgrading so.......slave that HD
in another machine and pull data off, format and reinstall cleanly.
