Hi,

Today I purchased a Minolta Dimage Scan Elite 5400, installed the driver
as administrator, powered down, plugged in the USB2 connection and
power, powered up but no luck. The behaviour seems flaky and
inconsistent, sometimes the scanner software fails immediately and
sometimes makes an effort !!

Scanner power light continues to flash
Motor noises from the scanner but eventually an error either:

Error = 4 Could not conform scanner connection
or sometimes
Error = 1 Unknown error Confirm all other DIMAGE software is closed

In device manager the device appears under imaging devices as working
normally.

Also tried on mobo USB 1 socket but same result.

The machine is based on a ABITBE6-II mobo running WIN2K SP4, 768 mb ram.
Can't afford to spend that much without resolving the problem or
returning the scanner. Does anyone one have any ideas or know of any
incompatibilities with the mobo.

Thanks
Dave

Just a few guesses:
Have you tried another cable, and made sure it's connected well?
Is the BIOS of your mobo the most recent?
Do you have the latest USB drivers for the OS?
Do you have other USB devices connected at the same time? Try adding one by
one, scanner first.
I think you did but, did you really install the software first, connecting
the scanner after SW installation?
Are you operating the scanner under extreme temperatures?

Then there is always the odd chance of a defective scanner.

Have you got an IE 1394 port? USB 2, especially the Via version, can
be quite flaky. Use 1394 if you can.

Hi,
I have the same Problem. After Deinstalling the Intellipoint Software for a
Microsoft Mouse the Scanner works fine.

Hi, Thanks for your suggestion. I don't have that particular software
installed so maybe the problem is more generic. Eventually, I don't
know why, the scanner connected but I still get very unreliable
operation. Any attempt to use ICE causes an error at about 90% of the
scan completed. I guess I need to investigate further. It does say in
the manual that ICE cannot be used on Kodachrome which most of my slides
are so that is a real pain.

My CPU is 1ghz. Should that be enough ?. I didn't see reference to a
minimum CPU in the manual.

Thanks
Dave

It will possibly slow things down a bit, but yo8 should be alright.

You can't use ICE with B&W or Kodachrome.

Thanks for the input.

The problem returned with a vengeance and the scanner was unusable on my
main machine using USB2. I downloaded the latest driver and installed
it on my backup machine, same mobo, less of everything else (including
installed applications) but using firewire and straight away everything
was fine. Too many differences to know what the problem is on the main
box but I have decided to make the second machine my data capture box
for film scanning and video capture even if I have to beef it up a bit.
I'll do any editing on the more powerful box whichever that is at the
time.

I'm puzzled about ICE and Kodachrome because although it says not in the
manual I ran tests that showed longer scanning times with ICE and an
apparent reduction in dust marks !!

Glad if I helped.

I have no doubt that the difference is that you're using Firewire
rather than USB. I use USB, but not for anything crucial :)

<g> Well, it's a general rule. It does depend on the scanner, the
transparency and it's exposure, and to a certain extent, the software.
Generally, the density of Kodachromes is the problem.

Back when I had VIA USB's, my general thought about it was <expletive
deleted>. Research seemed to show that my thoughts were common to
many people. My new Nforce chipset motherboard's USB's (with WinXP
SP1, sp1 needed for proper USB2 behavior) are reliable with a very
wide range of things I've used it for.
