When attempting to install win2000 on a fairly recent Intel motherboard with
a new hard disk I get about half way through the hardware detection process
and it freezes. No error message, it simply stops. No doubt there are bells
and whistles on a modern MB that a 9 year old OS won't recognize, but is
there a work around for this problem?

I am also having the same problem. I get to the point after the disk format
and file loads where the install process wants to access the boot CD. I then
get the "Press any key to boot from CD.." message but any keystroke just
stops the "..." sequence without any thing further happening.
I have had a lot of problems with the CD and HDD, probably due to lack of
recognition, but I thought they have been handled by BIOS adjustments. How do
I get to the point where I can load newer drivers?
The only OS I can run is DOS - maybe go back to 6.2, then upgrade up to
win2k? Any comments?

Sounds like some bad or misconfigured hardware. Make sure the disk ribbon is
OK and any jumper placements are correct and that the disk controller
reports the correct disk found. Then test the RAM and finally the graphics
adapter may be the culprit.

Reboot the computer and let it pick up where it left off.
and/or
shift-F10
cd \winnt
dir /od
type .log file to see setup status.
