I have just taken delivery of my brand new windows XP
Pro, it says on the box that it's for use on a Pc without
and operating system on it "Hurrah" I thought,no more
pratting about it's the full version, I only need to set
the thing to boot from the cdrom in the system bios and
i'm on my way Haa Haa, no such luck the thing won't boot
the cd doesn't seem to be bootable to me.

So I though out with the trusty floppy boot disk and away
we go, Haa Haa no such luck "will not run in dos mode.

Oh dear can anybody help please, and maybe tell me what
was the advantage of me spending £240.00 Quid on the full
version?

I reckon it maybe back in the box and winging it's way on
Monday unless some kind person out there can help me.

I really can't stand why it say's on the box that you do
not need an O/s on the system but advise a "thicky" how
to install it under such circumstancies...

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

9. If you happen to run into any installation difficulties, use the following resources:

It's not the full version. It seems rather dear. It's an OEM version. Which means it has to be sold with a computer or with hardware that requires XP to make it work.

The Dos setup is winnt.exe (not sure if OEM versions have it). If it's a genuine MS disk then it is bootable.
