While trying to install Defender i get a message come up saying "This
softwarerequires Windows XP Service Pack 2"

Any ideas on what I should do?

Is there some reason that WD NEEDS SP2? Or is it just some ploy to force
people to install SP2? I've seen the nightmares and heartache from SP2, and
have no intentions of EVER installing it...

Perhaps the reason you gave is part of it, perhaps it is just progress.
As time goes on more and more in and out of Microsoft will require SP-2.

If you will never install SP-2, then you will most likely never install
Windows Defender.

Most problems installing SP-2 are prevented with a computer ready for SP-2:

If programs or hardware are critical, a little research at the manufacturers
prevents most other issues.

I suspect that this:

may be a part of the equation.

You really need to do some more work on this, I think. I've read some of
your other messages, and I can assure you that flash does indeed work on as
many SP2 systems as the users want it to work on.

I believe Jupiter Jones has provided links to some useful resources in
getting past this issue. I don't have any systems I support--perhaps 50 in
all, that are not on SP2, and I don't recall any significant bumps in
getting them there.

I have a close friend who refuses to upgrade to Windows XP. I have even
offered him a copy of the retail version which is legitimate having never
been installed on any computer.

He just like to stay with Windows ME. I can't get a real explanation. Here
he is being offered FREE a legitimate copy of XP Professional + sp2 and he
refuses it.

I can't explain it and neither can he.

Regards,

Flash does work, if you are accessing it from the 'net. It does not work
from a local file. It's been a while since I tried to "fix" the problem for
a buddy, but if I remember correctly, IE would not let it open the .SWF file
do to some "security" BS, and there was a choice to allow it to "run" the
file. Even after choosing to allow it to run, it did nothing. Just a blank
screen. Could never get the files to open again, once he installed SP2...

Hey, I've get a couple C64s... If I had a little extra room, I'd be running
mine as well! Love those machines... Unfortunately, they are stored away
in the closet because of the lack of available space for a setup...

I'm trying to test this myself but without much luck so far:

This is what MacroMedia has to say about the subject--I suspect this is one
of those things where adjustments were needed by both vendors involved.
Flash is a substantial security risk--like any binary brought in across the
Internet. In fact, there's an update to the current flash playwer to
address security issues published very recently--March 14th.

(beware the Yahoo toolbar foistware!)

The security issues with Flash content are very real--but I can see that the
behavior that you encountered would be more than annoying.

I'll keep trying to see if I have flash content that I can try to execute
locally--so far all I've found is stuff in the TIF.

This is the grand tour of InfoPath--the newest app in Office11--surely
Microsoft wouldn't break the demo for a major introduction of a new piece of
software ?

(I ran it--told it to open in Internet Explorer--got the expected security
prompt, told it to go ahead, and it worked just fine.)

What's the surprise? I've got 1GB, but haven't noticed a surprise? Might
be because I started out with 1GB, instead of upgrading to it...

Hi

Well the key point is to run XP with all patches including SP2.

The only situation to be without SP2 is within a well protected
corporate network with maybe some old economy systems which SP2 breaks.

Also all drivers using XP SP2 as a development platform.

But security issues are most important, and to run a ME or non updated
XP PC nowadays with a broadband connection I would say is "stupid".

About RAM memory it´s maybe time to "house clean" your PC, add/remove
programs and uninstall old "junk" programs and then CCleaner runs,
www.ccleaner.com file cleaning and "issues".

Also a disc defrag is maybe needed or several rounds..............

Todays PCs with a broadband connection are mostly heavily filled with
clutter/junk.

This is somewhat good news... Like I said, it's been a while since I've
tried it on his system. He still has a number of things that don't work
properly, however I will have him try opening a file again and see what
happens. It may be that an update to Flash since that time has corrected
the problem, or maybe even some sort of update to XP...

Flash has changed a good many times since SP2 was introduced--folks have
been examining it closely, and found additional security issues that need
addressing--so lots will have changed, for sure.
