Installation CD

Dave

I bought this computer with windows xp home edition already installed. I
contacted HP and requested a copy of the software that was installed on it
when I bought it. I feel that if I have the software on the computer, I
should also have a copy of the CD's so that I can re-install should the need
arise. The need has come up several times for me in the past year (blaster
worm, et al, in spite of my firewall, security updates, etc).
What they sent me was copies of the recovery cd's which is really the same
as performing a complete system recovery.
The two problems I have with that is , #1 when I have to perform a
"re-install" I can't just install windows, (which is really all I need), I
have to re-install all the "CRAP" that HP installed on this computer from
the manufacturer(including all the spyware, and there were thousands of
registry entries I had to delete because of them). This process takes all
week for me to get my system back in the shape I wanted prior to a
corruption. And #2, when I want to perform a sfc /scannow, I need an
installation disk for the system to compare.
Can anyone tell me how I can make a copy of the windows xp home edition that
I have installed on this computer, so that I can just use that to do a fresh
"re-install" of windows xp without having to have two copies of windows on
my system (the C:i386 files are maintained in duplicate separate folders for
recovery)?
I understand Microsoft's concern about "bootleg" copies of windows, but I
just want to copy what is already mine, that I paid for. My product key is
already registered, so if I make a copy (by my understanding) no one else
would be able to use it but me anyway, isn't that right?
Someone, enlighten me please?
Thanks very much in advance for your expert assistance.

This is not a Microsoft problem at all. You're dealing with HP's
position on what it supplies, not with Microsoft's concern over
bootleg copies.

The problems you are concerned with are real ones. This is one of
the reasons I would never buy an HP computer, nor any other brand
that didn't supply a genuine Windows installation CD.

There is no way you can "make a copy of the windows xp home
edition that [you] have installed on this computer" so you can
"do a fresh 're-install' of windows xp." The only way you can get
a Windows CD is to buy one.

Hi Dave,

Unfortunately, what you paid for is HP's adulterated version of WindowsXP.
In short, you get what they decide to give you. Most major OEM's will not
supply a generic version, but only their system-specific one.

You didnt buy Windows XP you bought a HP computer and
they put their version of XP on it free this is what most
OEM's do.I got mine from DELL and the cd is a DELL cd and
will only install XP onto my computer if I change any
hardware on my computer it wont install.
What you can do is once you have installed XP and set it
up the way you like it . Get norton ghost or powerquest
Drive image and they will copy your system into a
compressed file so you can back it up to an original
state in a matter of minutes.

Actually, The Painter is wrong about the Dell CD. Provided the system
has a Dell BIOS, the Dell CD will work just fine.
