Whenever I try to install IE7 on to XP PRO SP2 I get an error that say's it
is incompatible with this version of Windows

Where/how are you trying to install IE 7? Go to Start...Run, type in
"winver" (no quotes), click Okay. What does that report?

Installing from Windows Update. The "winver" command says Windows XP Pro 5.1
Service Pack 2

Legit copy of Windows XP? Go to Start...Programs...Accessories...System
Tools...System Information. Under System Summary, what do the first three
lines report? Like this:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation

Windows Genuine Advantage Validation is an integral part of the IE7
installation. If your copy of Windows is not genuine you will not be able
to install it.
http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/validate.aspx - see if your
install passes here.

When installing IE, it's best to first do a power-off reboot, then disable
any anti-virus program you may have running and every other "security"
program. Close all the background stuff you can - like the stuff running in
your notification/system tray. Then try your install again. This method
will help prevent any program you may have running in the background, and
the anti-virus software, from interfering with the install of IE. Some AV
software just plain messes up an install of IE, and other programs may be
using a file that IE needs to update/replace/remove.

Try installing IE 7 from here, instead of WU:

the name)
