I recently purchased new HP laptop with Vista and having a hard time getting
used to things....
Can i install XP or is this not a good idea.

uh?? i went to that site but it doesn't say anything about rebooting vista to
XP...is this advisable and if so, how do i do this?

First, you will probably void your warranty by changing the OS to XP--you
need to check with HP as to the ramifications of making such a change. You
will also have to check with HP to see if XP drivers exist for your laptop's
hardware.

It's your computer, so the choice is, ultimately, yours.

However, there could be a couple possible adverse repercussions of
which you should be aware. First and foremost, if the specific computer
model in question was designed specifically for Vista, there may well be
no WinXP-specific device drivers available to make the computer's
diverse components work properly. Consult the computer's manufacturer
about the availability of device drivers. Secondly, removing an
OEM-installed operating system and replacing it with another will almost
invariably void any and all support agreements and, sometimes, even the
warranty. You would, at the very least, have to re-install Vista before
getting any support from the manufacturer. Again, consult the
computer's manufacturer for specifics. Thirdly, there will be the
additional cost involved in purchasing a WinXP license for this new
computer.

After backing up any data you wish to transfer to the new OS
installation, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Then the backed up data can be restored and applications (Those
that are WinXP-compatible, that is) re-installed.

can you please answer other question i posted:
Can you save desktop in order of appearance?

I know how to save the desktop but not in order of appearance so i can paste
onto new computer and have all icons appear in same order.
is this possible?
If i go to my c drive/ documents and settings/ and click on "desktop" that
saves everything on desktop but ONLY in alphabetical order (auto
arrange)....i want to be able to save in the order i have everything now.....

You mean that you'd like to desktop icons to appear in the same
location on the new desktop as they were on the original desktop? If
so, I know of no way of doing this, except by copying the entire user
profile from one computer to the next, which copies that user's portion
of the Windows registry (NTUSER.DAT).

To do this (on WinXP - I've never tried it on Vista):

1) Create a user account on the new machine/installation that uses the
same (exactly) name as the account on the old machine/installation.

2) Log in to the new machine/installation using this account to create
the user profile files (C:\Documents and Settings\Username).

3) Copy the C:\Documents and Settings\Username folder from the old
machine/installation to the new machine/installation, overwriting the
freshly created profile.

no...that's what i've been doing.....I'll try to be more clear......

i want to have my desktop icons appear in same order as i have them on my
old laptop and copy to my new one. I have many icons i drag and place in a
certain order so i don't have auto arrange or auto grid checked....i move
them where i want them. Thus, i want icons to paste EXACTLY in same order.

Doing it the way you suggested and as i mentioned, just like trying to paste
Favorites.....it "auto arranges in aplphabetical order" like it's a default.

I have my favorites in a certain order and unfortunately have had to do
several system recoveries on same computer....each time when i copy and past
favorites....they are pasted in alphabetical order and not the order in which
i had them originally when i copied them!!!!!

any suggestions????

here's a response i got from Richard in Az if you see my topic posted 11/5
"Save destop as is to paste to new computer"

What Mr. Ferguson told you is that your cannot just copy and paste the
layout of your desktop.
The layout is stored in a section of the file call the "registry". You need
a program that saves this registry section and then re-installs it.
However, there is a risk in re-installing a registry setting into a new
computer that has it's own registry settings.
I think you will just have to copy the short cut icon to your new computer
and then arrange them as you want.
Judging from your responses, you don't have the technical ability to fool
around in the registry.

So now my question is XP registry compatible or same as Vista?????

No, it's not.

XP keeps rebooting.
believe it is because of bad sectors
used the recover cd to use DOS chkdsk with fix options.
gets to 40% and bails saying there are to many errors.

tried to format partition, and re-install

unable to do any of the above.

any suggestions welcome,

It sounds like you're going to have to get a new hard drive..that one sounds
like it's about to die.

not sure how your response AND Ricky's ended up in my subject thread:

may want to notify Ricky as well

Also, if your two monitors are not exactly the same size and the same resolution, the icons will
never be in the same location.
Just changing the monitor resolution will move icons so that they fit the screen.
"ritsput" are you a type A personality that can't live with a slight change?
I have customer like that. I have to take a snapshot of his screen before I do any work on his
computer so that I am sure I get all the icons back in exactly the same position they were when I
started on the computer. What a pain in anal orifice.

my error. did a reply instead of start a new thread.
did not know how to remove.
