Hi, I would like to install an XP ( "non Vista") software application on my
Visa HP system and would appreciate if someone can please advise me what
settings I need to change to try and install XP software on a Vista system?
Thank you for your help,
Bob

Thanks DL, I thought that there were settings (it might have been in Control
Manager) that are specifically CHANGED to simulate XP. I've had this problem
with a few programs, the latest being Taxcut 2008 which DOES support Vista
but when I click My Computer -->CD/DVD Drive--> Explore-->Setup, nothing
happens. I tried it a few times (restarted my system) but it doesn't want to
install. I've contacted the manufacturer but thought I read somewhere that
you can specify Vista to "look like" XP, and avoid these glitches in the
future.
Thanks,
Bob

You are probably referring to 'compatibility mode'

Locate the setup.exe file of the application you wish to install and right
click on it. From the drop down menu select Properties. In the properties
window, Click the 'compatibility' tab. On the compatibility tab place a
check mark (tick) in the box marked 'Run this program in compatibility mode
for.' Make sure that 'windows XP (service pack 2) is visible in the dialogue
box. If it isn't then select this by clicking on the down arrow to the right
of the dialogue box. Finally click OK. Setup should now install in
compatibility mode.

With your Taxcut 2008 you might also try right clicking on the setup file
and, from the drop down menu, clicking 'run as administrator' to see if the
setup will install the application. It maybe that Taxcut 2008 needs elevated
privileges before it will install. But try doing this 'before' you try
compatibility mode.

First of all, there is really no such thing as "XP software," "Vista
Software," or non-Vista" software. Any program is able to run under
some group of operating systems, from one to many, and which ones they
are depends on how the particular program was written.

That said, in the great majority of cases (with the major exception
being some utilities), any program that runs under XP will also run
under Vista.
