I'm trying to install Windows 2000 server into a
different directory other than "winnt". After it formats
the partition it continues with the install and never
prompts me for a directory. (using cd for install.

This is by design. (Note that not everyone agrees this is the best design,
but it is the design.)

In order to choose the installation directory, a \windows directory must
already exist on the filesystem.

The easiest way to do this is to let Windows 2000 start to install (and
therefore create the default \windows folder), then hit the reset button,
start a new installation and let the new installation complete, boot into
the complete installation, and delete the \windows folder.
