I've been given the task of loading Win2k on a laptop that
has no floppy drive or cd-rom drive. Since I can't
install the operating system in the tradational method I
was hoping there's a way to install Win2k through the
LAN. The BIOS does support "Preboot Execution
Environment" i.e. boot from from network server.

How would I go about accomplishing such a task?

Buy a $10.00 adapter so that you can install the laptop
disk as a slave disk in some desktop PC, then copy the
Win2000 CD to its hard disk.

If it was my own laptop then I would spend the money and
buy a CD drive. Over the lifetime of the laptop it will cost you
much more in terms of labour cost while finding ingenious
ways to load new software or repair the OS.

If you have a Windows 2000 Server or Windows Server 2003 box available, you
can install RIS (Remote Installation Services).

This allows you to use the PXE functionality of your laptop to boot across
the network and install the OS.

Here's a step-by-step guide to deploying RIS using Windows 2000 Server.

It may be a lot of effort just for one laptop, but you may find the
technology useful enough to use more widely.

Hope this helps

Great to know that it is possible using Windows 2000
Server and Windows Server 2003. Sure would make it easier
to install the operating system to multiple computers.
Unfortunately, I don't have access to either at the
moment. Thanks for the help and quick response.

Cheers.

This is a method that I've used to install Windows on such a laptop. When
you start setup from DOS, ensure you have SmartDrive loaded, otherwise
you'll be there all day.

I remember doing that once. I went on vacation and when I came back it was
still copying files. --- Steve

PS - Don't use a Windows ME boot disk to install W2K via winnt DOS install.
