install visual basic .net std. 2003 on WinXP SP2 PRO

I used to have Visual Basic .net std. 2003 installed on WinXP SP1A. But I
found it too hard to upgrade WinXP to SP2. Now, I do have WinXP SP2
installed, but I am having problems installing Visual Basic .net standard
2003. Not installing Visual Basic at the WinXP SP1A level - was the only way
I found that I could
install WinXPSP2.
My computer was purchased with WinXP SP1 Professional. I also have
Norton Internet Security and Norton SystemWorks. I have disabled Windows
Firewall in order to just use the Norton firewall. I created an 'integrated
installation' in
order to load Dell's OEM WinXP SP1 and Microsoft's SP1A.

With WinXP SP2, and after installing IIS & Front Page Extension, Disc #1
reports the following message:

'Setup has detected that another program requires the computer to reboot. You
must reboot the computer before installing Visual Studio .Net Prerequisites.
Once the system reboots. you need to restart setup. Click OK to reboot.
Click
cancel to exit setup and install later.'
What happens after I reboot? - same thing again, I end up with the above
message again.

So I noticed that in one article (in the MSDN support area ), one
solution was to disable Norton Anti-Virus & Personal Firewall - by the
following method:

Start>Run>MSConfig and select the 'General Tab' for the 'Diagnostic
Startup' - which loads basic devices & services only.
After this process, Disc #1 reports the expected response:

'Please insert Visual Studio .net Prerequisites disk for Visual Basic .net
now'

Now, when I put the 'Prerequisites' cd into the drive, the weirdest thing
happens, I get the following message:

'Welcome to Microsoft Windows XP What do you want to do
a) Install Windows XP
b) Install optional Windows components
c) Perform additional tasks
d) Check system compatibility

After exiting from this menu, I used Explorer to check the folder titles
of the cd. They are:

VSWCUD1
dotNetFramework (folder)
Help (folder)
IE 6 osp1 (folder)
JSharpRedisCore (folder)
MDAC 27sp1 (folder)
NT sp6a (folder)
Program Files (folder)
Win (folder)
Window Installer (folder)
various files ( which include Setup.exe )

I clicked on the Setup.exe file and received the following message:

'Visual Studio .Net Prerequisites Warning:
Setup on CD1 should be used to launch Visual Studio .Net Prerequisites setup
so that only the necessary components are installed. Click Yes to exit and
change Cds. Click No to install all available components.'

Well, I don't think I want to install ALL available components - I just
want to install the ones I need. ( Installing all the components might
leave me
vulnerable to malware. ) So neither option - Yes or No is what I need.
What to do?

The end result of this posting is the same - if I follow the solution
described
computer from restarting by removing registry info .....).
 
Ralph, I am having problems installing Visual Basic .NET
PRO on WinXP home edition. The Pre-req cd is read fine, and
then when I clicked for step 2 (actual install of the software), nothing
happens. It just closes the installation
windows. Do you have any ideas ?
 
On my 'Disc 1', I have a setup folder. And Inside that folder is a
setup.exe file.
Click on that one.
Also, if you have any Norton products, disconnect from the internet and
temporarily
disable the Norton products - until next restart.
I have found that most of my problems stem from having Norton enabled while
installing software - especially the software that needs to make changes to
the
registry. Norton just messes it all up. Have Norton enabled during regular
computer usage - just not when you're installing new software.
