I try to install vista and go ok, untill I (and I'm guessing) half way
through the completing upgrade, where it then does nothing as in just sits
there and keeps going but never moves forward. I left it on while I slept in
hopes it was just slow, but alass it was still completing the upgrade.

Does the installation stall before or after you create your user account?

I ask because my installations have failed if I give the initial user a
password. I'm not sure why, and I have sent the details to Microsoft.

If yours fails before that point then I'm afraid your problem could be
related to any number of things.

Graham.

I am having the same problem. Install has been stalled in the last step for
22 hrs now. If I try to cancel the install it says that if I cancel now it
could render my computer inoperable. Everything of mine is backed up so there
would be no data loss if I just turned it off and started over, but I just
want to make sure that that "computer inoperable" line is not referring to
some change Vista has made in my bios. Seems unlike, but I thought I would
check. I am running a P4 3ghz 478 socket on an ECS board I got as a package
from Fry's, 512 mb corsair mem, sony dvd, 300gb seacrest hd, ATI 256 graphics
card, onboard sound, XP ran just fine on this arrangement. The Vista online
examination program said it loved my computer and found no problems with it
or my software, though it did say I would likely have to download new drivers
for the ATI graphics card.

Any help would be appreciated, twd

I am having the same problem. Vista upgrade install has been hanging on the
last step for 22 hrs now. If I try to cancel the installation it says that
doing so could render the computer inoperable. That "computer inoperable"
line has me spooked. It seems unlikely, but I hope Vista has not been messing
with the bios. Please let me know. I am running a home build with a P4 3ghz
cpu and an ECS board I got as a matched set from Fry's three years ago. 256
ATI graphics card, onboard sound, 512 corsair mem, sony dvd, 300gb seacrest
hd. This system worked just fine for the last three years on XP. The
downloadable pre-Vista inspection program loved my computer and only said I
might have to get new ATI drivers for the card. Everything of mine is backed
up. So should I turn it off and start over? Will I be writing back tomorrow
with the same problem? Is the rumored stability of Vista only a rumor? (And,
What about Naomi?)!? Please let me know. twd

I have done 3 things before I tryed to reinstall I updated the drivers for my
ati video with the vista drivers from their website, I also updated the
drivers for my sound card. Also I Uninstalled Norton Internet Security 2006.
I belive 1 of these 3 things fixed my problem.

Almost certainly it was Norton. Norton is NOT compatible with Vista and will
not uninstall after the upgrade.
If you don't uninstall it before upgrading to Vista, it usually requires a
clean install to fix.
