Okay may sound dumb and noobish but. i have 1 disc from the manufacturer that
i use every now and then to clean up everything (it has all the progs and
stuff that came with the laptop. etc. ) but i dont have a solo windows XP
disc just that one reboot disc. will that be sufficient to use, if vista
doesnt work out for me, to go back to windows xp. just reboot and start back
over with everything like it came from the factory?

Yabba Dabba Doo!

In other words , yes lol, does your laptop have more than one HDD?

Do not install Vista on the only partition of the only drive on your primary
computer. Either use a second partition or wait until Vista releases next
year. Better yet, use a test computer.

Do not replace XP on this machine with the expectation that it will be easy
to put XP back. Installing Vista can overwrite the code that enables you to
restore from the manufacturer's recovery cd's and you might not be able to
use the recovery cd until you get a fix from the manufacturer.

oh, I didn't realize that lol, my mate tried it though and he was back on
XP. (though I didn't realize his HDD is pretty big lol, so should have
created a second partition lol)

May I ask, if you used an original Win XP set-up CD would you come across
the same problem?

The only problem you might run into using the hologrammed XP cd is that it
might not have proprietary drivers provided by the manufacturer of your
computer. Check the manufacturer's website first and download the drivers
for your computer. Burn them to a cd so you can install the drivers from
the cd after XP is loaded.

I did that but only because I have all my important data on my second computer. I wanted to do this so then I could use Vista on an everyday basis and find its strengths and weaknesses. If I wanted to replace Vista and go back to XP, I have all the CD's in ready and in order so that I could be back to XP and running all my application is a few hours.

I do not think that anyone should replace XP with Vista carelessly. They are only asking for trouble. Especially if they do not have their XP CD and applications available to re-install. I do have them all so I was not worried in at all to make the plunge and use Vista as an only OS on my main PC. So far, I am loving it.

I've done what you did, only on one of my desktops. It needed a format anyways lol, and I always try to keep installation programs to a minimum (especially games). But its a pretty gud desktop and Vista is running fine :)
