I discovered that the "friend" who installed XP for me did
not use the CD that I gave him. Instead he used a pirated
version. Now I cannot install the SP1 update because it
found that the version is not valid.
I spent over an hour on the phone with MS trying to
resolve the problem but the person I spoke to was unable
to answer my questions.
I have been using the invalid copy of Windows XP on the
computer for over a year now and have hundreds of
applications installed. The "friend" did a clean install
of XP. I have been told that this means I cannot uninstall
XP and then install the valid copy.
How do I get the valid copy installed?
