I am going to reinstall xp. When I put the applications back on should I
install them in safe mode or just shutdown all of the running programs and
services?

Although many applications advise that you shut down
running programs i haven't come across one that suggests
closing services as well. Besides, with xp there are hell
of a lot of services to close.
Personally, when i install software, all my services are
still running, as is my anti virus software and firewall.
I haven't, yet, experienced any problems with the way i
install. Just make sure that you haven't got any open
windows such as windows explorer, my documents, etc. Just
have the application setup screens running

Hope this helps

Close anti-virus and unneeded programs running next to clock. Services are
fine, no need to stop any. No need for safe mode to install apps.

Closing down your anti-virus is highly recommended before installing new
ware. Heck, the authors of the ware even recommend this in the initial
dialogs.

Do *not* go turning off services in general. DIsable any AV, so it does
not start trying to 'repair' changes that are being made, shut down any
programs you have running in the ordinary way (mostly so that they do
not lose open files if the system is shutdown under their feet) and
perhaps use MSConfig to disable the regular startup group (mainly so as
to save time if you do multiple restarts).

One thing though - if after installing a program it says you must
proceed to reboot, do so *before* setting out to install another - don't
risk two lots of updates trying to run at the same time.

And a comment - before you go to the level of work implied by a complete
format and reinstall, try a Repair. Set the BIOS to boot CD before Hard
disk, then boot the XP CD, start Setup (do not take 'Repair' at this
stage), then after the license agreement take 'Repair Installation'.
This will retain your existing software installations and most settings.
But Updates will have to be run again, especially SP1; unless the CD
used was one with SP1 inbuilt

I agree, I have installed loads of programs from utilities to games
and never had programs. Closing programs is ok but not services and I
would not advise it anyway as Windows relies on a lot of Services to
function.
