My hard drive is going bad and I would like to install XP
on a new hard drive that I just bought.

I physcially installed the drive and had put the XP CD in
the CD drive. But I'm worried that the install program
might install XP over the old drive instead of the new
drive that I just bought.

How do I make sure that it will install on the new drive?

Thanks,
Terry

If you are really concerned then just disconnect the old drive while
installing XP. You can always reconnect it after. Make sure that you set the
jumper on the new drive to Master on the Primary Controller. Move the jumper
on the old drive to Slave before you reconnect it.

I need to have the original drive in the machine since
the version of XP I have does not have a bootable CD.

As I understand it, your XP CD disk is bootable (make sure your BIOS is set
up to allow booting up from a CD drive). So just disconnect your old drive
temporarily and proceed.

If you have a floppy drive the second drive would not be necessary. If it
is starting to fail, I think it would be better to avoid including it in the
setup. If used at all it should only be for temporary storage since all
contents are at risk.

There are other boot options for setup. Those include running setup from a
Win98 startup disk (with CDrom drive support and smartdrive added so
that the file copying doesn't take hours and hours) or the special set of
floppy disks for installing XP:

I do have the 98 boot disk that you are talking about.

But how do I install XP using it?
