I look after a PC for some friends who are
not very PC aware. Today I upgraded with a
new system unit. I had done most of the XP and
software installation earlier this week off line at
my place. Today I took it to them for connection
to the web and printer/camera install and a few
other bits.

I installed the printer... - worked just fine...
was able to print - no problems. I then had some
problems installing a Canon camera and as part
of that debug I uninstalled the Printer driver/software...
Now I can't reinstall it...

I run the latest driver from the HP site... However
when I plug in the USB cable the XP "New Hardware Found"
software kicks in and fails because I have nowhere to
point it at to find the drivers...

I have been round and round and round the HP site..
I have been through post after post from google and
have seen others with similar problems but no fixes!
I'm fed up... very, very fed up... :-(

Hope that someone can help...

Two things to check, and you may already have done these?

1. The fact that the PC is recognizing the printer and looking for the drivers
means that the printer is connected and powered on. Generally HP printers are
best installed with the cable disconnected while you install from the CD and
the installer will ask you to connect the printer at some stage. If you do this
the wrong way round you can get all sorts of problems. Yes I know it sounds
silly but this is a fairly standard HP install process which I am sure is for
good reason.

2. If that does not work then you may be able to point the installer at the
driver disc, often a subdirectory called drivers/en or similar.

If all that fails you may need to back up your registry and remove all registry
entries associated with Hewlett Packard (assuming this is the only HP device
and the PC is not a HP PC).
Then install as in 1 above. If you get any problems you can always recover fom
the registry backup (Microsoft has instructions for registry backup and restore
on their website).

Tony,
Many thanks for your help...

Yes - I understand about the Printer being powered
off / disconnected during the driver install.. There is a
point in the install where the HP software asks you
to plug in the device, but also gives you the option
to continue installation without connecting. Either way
it's the same result..

Your point about finding the drivers folder is a good one.
I did try to install the old drivers that came with the machine...
But the CD seems to be knackered... I has a scratch on it..
That's doubly frustrating because I take absolute care of
my CDs, and it's difficult to instil in other the same discipline!
It's been one of those days...

So I have the downloaded EXE of the latest driver... and
drivers folder... One thing I haven't done is go search out
where it unpacks this all to.. Perhaps I can route out the
driver from the temp file or summat...

I really don't want to have to route around in the registry..
I think I'd rather reinstall windows!!!

Ho humm...
Many thanks,
Roy

Tony,
I'm reposting cos there we so many typos in the post that it
hardly made sense! - Apols - a long day...

Yes I understand your reluctance with the registry, I do that only as a last
resort and if the windows installation is new then I would also prefer to
re-install it.
If the downloaded driver is a self decompressing file you could try winzip or
similar and unpack it to a folder of your choice and maybe the drivers will be
there????
Tony

Hmm - yes I didn't actuallt try Winzip...
It's didn't appear in the right click menu...
Perhaps if I try to open it from winzip -
I'll give that a try - many thanks for the help,
Roy

I've had similar problems with Kodak easyshare cameras.

The solution that worked was to go to Safe mode and uninstall all the
printer drivers and software.

Restart and the re-install with the either the manufacturers or XP's
drivers WITHOUT the printer being plugged in.

Next plug the printer in. I'm not sure if it has to be on in order for
Xp recognize it.

If the above doesn't work you can do the same except do the install in
Safe Mode.

Tnom..

Many thanks for you thoughts re Safe Mode -
hadn't thought of that..

Re Julia...

What a wonderful, wonderful description...

ROFLMHO.....

Wouldn't you just love to be a fly on the
wall somewhere in HP where this gets discussed...
If it ever does... Do you think they care..
I'm sure they do, but it just don't feel like it from
out here!!!

It's an absolute battle, going round their website,
to get to anyone inside HP to help.

Just makes you wonder why it's so difficult..
Are they perhaps trying to make it all too
complex...

Reminds me of the early "nightmare printing"
days of OS2 :-)

Make sure you have any firewall or virus protection shut off, as well as
other background programs. You probably wish to disconnect yourself
from the internet during this period is you are one cable broadband or
ADSL, for instance.

Art,
Yes - good points...
Am going to have another go at it tommorow...
I'll feed back about how I get on!
Thanks,
Roy

OK - Many thanks to all who posted here to help.

I have fixed the problem.

I first found the temporary files that had been left
behind by the HP installer. I'm not in front of the
machine now but I think they were in something like..

Documents and Settings\UsrName\Local Settings\Temp\HPsomething...

I plugged in the USB cable and switched on the printer.

XP jumps in and tells me it has found new hardware...

I point it at the folder above... it does it's stuff and

hey presto it all works...

Many thanks again... Sanity restored.. :-)

Now if I could only get this damn scanner to work!!!
