install new hardware wizard stopping

hi, have just bought an external hard drive and have a CD rom driver to
install it on windows 98 on an old pc.
the driver just stops in the 'install new hardware' wizard. i have disabled
my zone alarm and avg antivirus. any ideas as to what might be stopping the
wizard from proceeding please? many thanks

You might want to try the 98 groups. This is Internet Explorer ver. 6
Browser-type issues. However I would recommend installing the software prior
to inserting the device at all. After it's installed turn off the PC, plug
in the device, and reboot and it should go through with the installation.
