INSTALL.LOG file ??????

Jason

I'm trying to remove a couple of unnecessary programs from
my computuer (XP Pro) and when using either the Add/Remove
Programs or the program's uninstaller I get the same error
message: "Cannot open the INSTALL.LOG file"

I'm not sure what this exactly means, or more importantly
how to resolve the issue so I can remove these programs.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for your
time and (hopeully) assistance.

Regards,

Jason

The install.log/uninstall.log usually contains the uninstallation information about a program. When you remove a program from Add/Remove Programs, the log files come into play and remove the corresponding software entries from the registry and the files in the hard disk.

If the LOG files are missing, you may need to reinstall the application again (in the same path) and then try a clean uninstall again. In some cases, the application might be removed, but the entries may still exist in the Add/Remove Programs applet. Orphaned entries are usually a result of a system restore rollback operation.

The install.log is needed so it knows what to uninstall. With out uninstall
usually won't work. To fix, reinstall the applications, then use the
uninstall listed in add/remove programs.

I've had the same thing happen. it was a while ago, but as
I remember... I let it uninstall the best it could then
I trash canned everything else I could find. You should
write or print out all the files you trash in case you
throw out the wrong thing and have to use system restore.
That way you can start over more effectively. Any little
pieces left in your system files should not hurt anything.
If those system files are the reason you must get out
that .exe then you need better info than mine. -Mark

All it does is invoke the uninstall program left with the software in
its own folder when you installed it - it is that which cannot find a
file that it needs in order to know what to do. The usual work around
for this is to install the program again, over the top, into the same
folder, when the Remove should now work
